BEHIND THE SCENES

The Canyonlands Ranch Project

Check out our work from a 2023 project in the La Sal Mountain Range just East of Moab, Utah. During this project, our team reconstructed a 40x60 timber frame barn originally reclaimed from a small town in central Indiana. We crafted a 20x20 custom hand-hewn dovetail cabin out of sleeper beams reclaimed from a bank barn and also restored a log saddle shed original to the property.

Reclaim

In Markle, Indiana, we found a 40x60 white oak timber barn from the 1860s. We carefully took it apart, measuring and tagging each beam. This way, we know exactly where each beam and post goes during reconstruction. We also make drawings on-site, which we use later to create precise plans for our team during the restoration process.

Renew

Once deconstructed, we shipped the 40x60 Gunstock Frame back to our shop in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Upon unloading, we sorted, removed nails, and power washed all the timbers to remove years of dirt and grime. Once the beams are clean, we inspect each one for defects, rot, or damage. We noted over 50 repairs for this frame. After creating a full list of tasks, we begin repairing what can be fixed and replacing the rest with era-authentic timbers. By the time we're done, the frame is ready to stand strong for another 100 years.

Rebuild

Upon completion of the restoration work, we shipped the fully restored Gunstock barn frame to Moab, Utah, along with all the other reclaimed materials our client ordered. Once there, we unloaded the materials and started assembling the frame on the ground using white oak wooden pegs. After constructing the frame on the ground, we used a telehandler to lift it up one bent (or wall) at a time. Once the frame was set, we installed the rough sawn rafters, siding, custom-milled flooring, loft floor joists, and reclaimed threshing floor. The 40x60 original vintage barn frame now stands tall as a central structure along with two other reclaimed cabins on this already impressive ranch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I want to convert a reclaimed barn frame into a living space?

We’ve helped our clients convert barns into beautiful living spaces. Success comes from having the right planning and team. We can provide all the reclaimed materials you need and guide you to architects and designers who specialize in barn conversions. Additionally, we can help find a qualified contractor to build out the living space once our team finishes raising the frame.

How long will a reclaimed timber structure last?

With proper care and maintenance, a reclaimed timber frame can last for many generations, echoing the longevity of the original structures.

Where does Three Ten Timber source its materials?

We only source the best materials to ensure top-tier craftsmanship. We partner with farmers across the Midwest and Eastern US to find the finest barns. This ensures our projects reflect rich history and character.

As far as reclaimed materials, we have strong connections and a deep understanding of the market. We get reclaimed siding, flooring, joists, and roof boards directly from local Iowa barns, carefully dismantled by our team. We also work with reputable reclaimed companies accross the US to source material outside of Iowa. This mix of direct sourcing and trusted partnerships ensures every piece of wood contributes to the beauty and durability of our projects.

What geographical areas does Three Ten Timber cater to?

We're proud to serve our awesome clients across the United States. We're committed to bringing the beauty and history of reclaimed timber to homes and businesses nationwide.

What is the turnaround time for a reclaimed frame?

We highly recommend locking in your reclaimed barn project a year before you plan on starting construction. This gives us the time we need to source material, customize the frame if needed and ensure the restoration work is done well.

Do you help with delivery and installation of the reclaimed structure?

Yes, we mangage the entire delivery process to ensure the frame arrives on time and safely to its final destination. We also offer our services to re-erect barn frames if that is something you are looking for.

Are your plans stamped by an engineer?

We have several architects and engineers we work with who are familiar with reclaimed structures. Let us know if you require these extra services and we will make the connection.

What is the cost of a reclaimed frame?

The cost of a reclaimed frame can vary drastically depending on finishing touches, size of the footprint, complexity of custom timber framing and other factors outside of our control like local labor and material prices. A safe budget for a project like this is $150+ a sqaure foot to have it brought to completion. Reach out today for a free estimate for our part of the work.

What is the cost to restore my barn?

The cost to restore a barn you own can vary drastically due to the amount of work your barn needs to be restored. Are you putting new rough sawn siding on the barn or are you wanting the barn taken down, restored and set on a new slab? Reach out with details and we will get you a free estimate for our part of the work.

What if I'm struggling to find a contractor to take on the rest of the work?

If you are struggling to find a qualified contractor to finish the work we will put our boots on the ground and work on your behalf until we find someone you're comfortable with. We will make phone calls, interview and check references on your behalf.
